Grunge Daddy Ichiban
The man at the center of GrungeZhou. A ronin in a kimono-esque coat and flannel, shoulder-length locs, a katana, and an orange fanny pack reading GRUNGEzhou. He has not spoken since childhood.
The short version
Nobody knows his birth name. "Ichiban" — number one, the best — is a title the world gave him. His mother told him he would grow up to be the greatest man alive, then disappeared. He survived on the streets of Libeu, rescued an orange kitten he named Chairman Meow, and made a covenant the night the cat was killed: hunt every one of the Eight Suits.
He keeps it.
What he can do
- Telekinesis — moves the world without touching it.
- Telepathy — reads what people haven't finished thinking. He answers before the mouth moves.
- The Red Gaze — a dried, cracked, faintly pulsing mushroom. Grants visions and power. "A loan, and the interest was steep": black nosebleeds, mycelium glowing under the skin.
- The Red Gaze, fully consumed — omnipotence. Which turns out to be boring. He leaves with an Irish goodbye.
His palm bears a sigil: a falcon clutching a key, burned in by a shard of the Supreme Being.
The rule
Silence is not absence — it is potential unrealized. He mouths words, nods, grunts. He does not speak. There is exactly one exception in all of canon, and you'll know it when you reach it.
Where he appears
Book One (origin) → Book Two: Eight Suits (the revenge) → Book Three (the hard out) → the date-night finale. Full reading order.
